THE newly built modern state of the art University of the South Pacific (USP) campus located at King George, East Honiara was formally commissioned this morning.
The country’s Governor General His Excellency, David Tiva Kapu was given the honour to formally declare the campus open much to excitement of the guests, staff and students.
The official opening ceremony which commenced at around 10am this morning was witnessed by ome Cabinet Members including the Finance Minister Manasseh Sogavare.
Other guests includes the Regional Director of the Asian Development Bank’s (ADB) Pacific Liaison and Coordination Office, Shane Rosenthal and the Vice-Chancellor of USP, Professor Pal Ahluwalia.
The USP management described the occasion as a momentous occasion for the regional university marking the beginning of a new chapter of Pacific Education.
In his welcome address USP Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia said, the campus is equipped with modern facilities that will provide a conducive learning environment for the students.
He said, the completion of the campus will surely serve the students of Solomon Islands for years to come.
Acting Prime Minister Bradley Rodo Smoky Tovosia took time to acknowledge the custodian of the land where the campus is built on.
He thanked all the partners, USP, ADS, Solomon Islands Government and private sector for ensuring one of the government’s vision to enhance and improve the education sector in the country was finally fulfilled.
He acknowledged past governments for initiating the move to establish a fully-fledged USP campus in Honiara.
He said, the campus will now benefit the students of this country and the region.
Following the official declaration and opening by the Governor General there was a guided tour throughout the facility by all the VIP guests led by the campus Director Billy Fito’o.
As part of the celebration, USP on Tuesday organised an open day for the public and students.
Members of the visiting USP delegation from Fiji will be officiating at the USP graduation on Friday.
