Solomon Islands students studying at the University of South Pacific’s (USP) Laucala campus in Fiji have been evacuated from their residential dormitories at the campus to the USP food court building.
The move was made in light of the devastation caused by cyclone Winston, which is wreaking havoc throughout Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu.
Journalism student Simon Abana told the Sunday Star that many local students were sheltering at the food court hall to avoid danger.
He said the cyclone struck with very devastating gale force wind speed, uprooting trees and destroying homes and everything in its path.
He said strong winds have destroyed communication network making it difficult for the students to communicate with relatives at home.
Abana said the category 5 cyclone has wreaked havoc since Friday night on Fiji’s outer islands.
He said students were put in a state of alert in preparation for any emergency evacuations to a safer shelter point in the event the situation worsens.
