THE University of the South Pacific, Solomon Islands (USPSI) campus has secured a new classroom building in Chinatown to host its daily tutorial and lectures.
The new classroom building is located just opposite the Coronation Christian School at Chinatown and is owned by a Chinese businessman.
The new location was necessary following last April’s flash flood that washed away part of the western ground of the Mokolo building, which USPSI has been renting over the years.
After the flooding, USPSI shifted its tutorial and lectures to St. Nicholas and Honiara High schools.
USPSI administrative co-ordinator Layson Leve said, now that they’ve secured a new building in Chinatown to host the classes, the Mokolo building will no longer be used.
Mokolo building was owned by businessman and MP for Malaita Outer Islands.
“Also we are moving in here because the Mokolo building is currently under renovation,” Mr Leve said.
“Shifting of things/stuffs to the new building commences Thursday last week,” he said.
Mr. Leve added that the building will house two lecture theatres upstairs with four tutorial rooms plus the Solomon Islands Students Association (SISA) office downstairs and offices of the academic staffs.
He said that partitioning work, electrical, installation of air-conditions and windows are currently underway.
“As soon as all the renovation work is done with installation of internet cabling by our IT staffs then we can used the building to conduct our tutorials and lectures.”
Mr Leve said that partitioning work has started Tuesday and all work are expected to be completed by end of February.
He said they will not be moving back to the Mokolo building again.
“We’ll stay here till the Doma campus is completed.”
Meanwhile, he said while renovation and installation work continues throughout February, tutorial and lecture classes will be conducted as usual at St. Nicholas and Honiara High school.
The USP tutorials and lectures commence 16th February.
