PORT VILA, (ABC) – The number one beach volleyball pairing from Vanuatu, Miller Pata and Linline Matauatu, sent shock waves through the sport when they defeated the top seeded pair Brazil’s Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas at the World Tour event in the US.
For the Vanuatu team, seeded 22, it was the biggest win of their careers, and another example of their remarkable resilience competing against a backdrop of the devastation back home caused by Cyclone Pam.
It also demonstrated that come the Olympic Games in Rio next year, Miller and Linline could be serious medal contenders.
Debbie Masaufakalo, president of Vanuatu Beach Volleyball, says the pair had faith in themselves.
