VEHICLE owners that are servicing the east road in Malaita are threatening to sue the government, if any severe accident occur along the road – as it is in a very bad state now.
The Malaita East road was in a great need of repair as the road condition has gone from bad to worse over the past days.
Information reaching Solomon Star claimed that the condition of the road was beyond safety measures as land slides and drains dug up by rain continue to ruin the road.
In some places the road only fit a single wheel and in the worst affected areas the road was totally cut off.
Speaking to the Solomon Star from East Malaita on behalf of the vehicle owners, Preston Billy said the road was being neglected for months now and it was time the government through the ministry responsible stepped in for a rescue before matters go worse.
“We fear the safety of the travelling passengers to and from east Malaita due to the current state of the road.
“With that, the government will be the blame should any incident might occur anytime from now.
“As vehicle operators servicing the east road, we cannot halt our operations because it is the only link for the rural people to reach Auki or even Honiara,” Mr Billy said.
He moved on to say that, the people deserved a better ride to their villages or to Auki town and the government must quickly consider ways to get the road fixed and operational.
In a recent interview with the Member of Parliament for East Kwara’ae Manasseh Maelanga, he said plans are underway to create a new road which will be crossing over from Central Kwara’ae to east Kwara’ae.
But, the only issue now was for landowners in the said region to open up their lands for new development.
