Police capabilities and capacities must be modernized and sustainable to counter emerging security challenges, a strong statement uttered by Honorable Minister of the Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Services (MPNSCS) Mr. Anthony Veke during the official opening of the Provincial Police Commanders (PPCs) and Directors conference of the Royal Solomon Island Police Force (RSIPF) in Honiara today (1st May 2023).
Minister Veke has highlighted that the policing capabilities and capacities must be such that they are sustainable and environmentally friendly to our people. In our evolving security environment, where there are so many challenges to police work, you all would agree with me that the only viable solution to counter these challenges is working together.
Honorable Veke said police challenges are further exacerbated by limitation in available resources to police. Therefore police will need to think smart and do things smartly in our challenging environment.
“With the theme, ‘Partnership and collaboration in strengthening the RSIPF future capability and capacity for a safe and peaceful Solomon Islands.’ Mr. Veke has highlighted two key elements which are partnership and collaboration.
“This is a direct call for police to put heads together to tackle whatever issues you encounter in your policing work. It is also calling you to create, build and strengthen positive networking with all stakeholders in the community including important donor partners,” said Minister Veke.
Mr Veke said the second call for this partnership approach is to strengthen the RSIPF future capability and capacity. Police being the traditional keeper and enforcer of law and order, peace and security must have a regular system of reviewing its capabilities and capacities so that it is able to provide efficient and effective policing services.
He said the theme chosen for this conference is a timely call for all PPCs and Directors to take stock of your current work and reflect and make recommendations on the way forward.
“I, as your responsible Minister, have great confidence in your capabilities. That you will take on the challenges to change the way you do things for safe and peaceful Solomon Islands, both present and future generations,” said Honorable Veke.
Conference gathered all PPCs and Departmental Directors of the RSIPF to review the 2023 Annual Business Plan, discuss and develop the 2024 draft Annual Business Plan. The conference will conclude by the end of this week.
