THREE women were caught selling betel nut yesterday on the street by the Honiara City Council (HCC) law enforcement officers, which has attracted a huge crowed.
Despite the recent call from the HCC authority to keep 7 metres clear from the shops and buildings along the Honiara Street, some vendors continue to breach the 7 metres bylaw enforced by the HCC.
This occurred on Thursday at the bus stop opposite the Honiara Central Market where the women were chased and left their betel nut market behind.
The incident attracted a good number of people to huddle up curiously at the scene and stared at the betel nut vendors who had an argument with two of the HCC Law enforcement officers.
Among the crowd one could hear the loud voice of the muscular HCC officers talking.
“How many times do we have to stop you people from selling things along the street, are you people animals for not understanding our warnings?”
“We have to remind you people that we are getting tough on street vendors and we won’t have mercy for anyone whether you’re my wantok or relative,” the officer said.
The HCC law enforcement officer said, that this year 2015 and attitude of street vendors must change so that we all can keep our town clean and beautiful.
“Nobody wants to see your bad attitude spitting betel nut juice all over the place and littering betel nut skin on the street, this should be an attitude of the past and for those street vendors, please go to the right place and sell your things there, where we won’t come after you and confiscate all your belongings including your cash,” he said.
The officer said, that they will continue to patrol the street of Honiara everyday and vendors must careful because they would not have mercy for anyone being caught selling in the streets.
