WAIMAPURU national secondary school finished off as the overall winner of the 2018 National Inter-school Athletics Championship.
They were confirmed overall winners following the final count of medals won throughout the two days competition at the St Josephs Tenaru Secondary School.
Waimapuru scooped a total of 25 gold medals, 14 silver medals and seven bronze medals for both the track and field events.
Head of delegation for the Waimapuru team, George Kalauma has predicted they are in for the overall award after day one of impressive results.
He thanked his athletes for their strong performance though this is the first time for some of the athletes to compete in such a big competition.
“I did predict we are going to win the overall award following our impressive results, winning most of the gold medals in day one of competition.
“Now that its confirmed, I would like to thank my athletes for a job well done.
“Our preparations has paid off,” he said.
Kalauma said Waimapuru School believes sports play an important role in the academic learning of students thus, helped them to engage more in sports.
Waimapuru has 60 athletes competing in both the track and field events.
They have been preparing for this event for the past months after the annual Makira Athletics Championship hosted at the school.
The National Inter-school Athletics Championship competition ended yesterday following a day of sweat, heat and excitement from the final track and field events.
Host, St Josephs Tenaru finished second on the overall tally with 15 gold medals, 21 silver medals and 12 bronze medals.
Bishop Epalle has five gold medals, two silver and five bronze medals, Rokera has four gold medals four silver and 11 bronze medals, Honiara High has one gold, two silver and three bronze medals, Guguha from Isabel won three silver and seven bronze medals, McMahon won one gold, three silver and one bronze medal, and King George Sixth won one silver and four bronze medals.
Presentation of awards will be held after the National Athletics Championship on Saturday.
