Climate change and sea level rise – this existential threat seems to only be given recognition in the government’s speeches in international fora.
Leader of the Opposition and Member of Parliament for Aoke/Langalanga made this profound statement in his Special adjournment debate in the parliament on Wednesday.
He told the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement that there is great need for a clear, realistic, and well thought out policy on mitigation, adaptation and especially relocation.
“No amount of postponement of this matter is going to solve it,” he added
Wale out rightly told the government that there is negligence on this matter.
“How long does government need to craft a comprehensive policy response to this challenge?” he further questioned.
Wale told the government that climate change should be on the radar as they prepares for its 2022 budget.
In his address to the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Prime Minister Sogavare says that the time for action is now.
Sogavare has called for global solidarity in the fight against COVID-19 and climate change.
The Solomon Star understands that Solomon Islands this week has joined other Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) to celebrate firm climate commitments at the margins of the Dubai World Expo 2020 at a gathering held on Tuesday 5th October, 2021.
Currently, a large part of the Solomon Islands Government budget is used on the importation of fossil fuel while only 20 percent of the population is connected to the National Grid and therefore the dependence on Renewable Energy from Solar Farms to Mini Hydro’s and Hydro power is the only way to deal with Climate Change.
Solomon Islands Commissioner General to the Dubai Expo, Ambassador Moses Kouni Mose said that the Solomon Islands is increasing its overall efforts as a SIDS to help mitigate the growing impacts of Climate Change.
The United Arab Emirates has been approached to help support the Solomon Islands in the 2023 Pacific Games as part of its ‘Green Games Initiative’.
