A goal each from strikers Anald Rhodi and Davidson Tome was enough for Honiara Warriors to secure top position in Group B of the Solomon Cup currently underway in Honiara.
The Eddie Marahare coached side sized three maximum points over Guadalcanal Hornets following their 2-0 victory in the final match of day 7 of the competition yesterday.
Left footer Rhodi gave Warriors the lead in the first half while Tome sealed the victory in the second half which moved them joint top with six points with Central province.
However, Warriors had a one goal average advantage over Central province.
Marahare said he was pleased with the result despite the score margin.
“Overall I am happy with the result, despite the score line,’’ Marahare told local media after the match.
He said they had another important match which will determine their fate to make the second stage of the competition.
“We have another important game on Thursday and we need to go back to the drawing board to try and work hard on areas that need improvement,’’ he said.
Warriors will take on Temotu Arrows in the final pool games tomorrow.
Hornet head coach Abraham Iniga credited his boys for their fine performance despite the loss.
“We just give away this game,’’ he said.
He said his boys have more chances compared to Warriors but they did not utilize their scoring opportunities.
“I think if we make use of our chances we should win this game,’’ he said.
“But I am proud of my boys performance,’’ he continued.
He said out of their three games so far, the match against Warriors was the best game they have ever played.
He also stressed, despite not having the chance to make it to the semifinal they will complete their campaign on a high note.
Guadalcanal Hornets will take on Lauru Kukuvojo in their final group match.
Meanwhile in the earlier match yesterday, Temotu Arrows and Lauru Kukuvojo ended their match with a 1-1 draw.
The Solomon Cup match Day 8 will continue today with Group B battles.
First up at 1pm today the Solomon cup defending Champions Malaita Eagles will take on Rennell Bellona to be followed by Isabel Frigates and Western Turtles at 3pm.
