A SOLID waste management workshop for counterparts in Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu is currently underway in Honiara.
Participants from respective countries in government, city councils including relevant organizations are here for this three days’ workshop that started on Wednesday.
This is part of JICA under its J-PRISM program under its pilot projects in the pacific island countries.
Japanese Embassy representative, Kenichi Kimiya told the participants that solid waste is a challenge to all municipalities.
“Japan itself back in the 70’s faces many problems with collecting the solid waste, treating and disposing it properly.
“Your participation as government agencies and municipalities from these three countries in sharing the experiences on solid waste management are important.
“This is for both successful ones and problematic ones that can be used as learning curve to each other.
“I encourage you all to enthusiastically participate in the workshop discussions, express your opinions and listen well to the presentations of the other participants.”
Kimiya added field trip visits will be organized during the course of the workshop will be interesting to learn from.
“Please make use of these visits to see the advances Solomon counterparts are making in solid waste management, and better the activities there with valuable suggestions and comments that you might have.”
He said reflecting on the J-PRISM project itself is also vital to taking onboard the recommendations for phase 2.
“I am sure JICA is looking forward to hearing these recommendations in order to incorporate them into future technical assistance project as appropriate.”
