Western province celebrated its Second Appointed Day on Wednesday in Gizo.
Despite the mild heat from the sun, hundreds of delegates and members of the public braved the day to be part of the 33rd anniversary, commemorating its significance in the governance of the western province.
Leading the parade yesterday was the police and Correctional Officers into the John. F. Kennedy Stadium a band of men and women gracing the field with their colors.
Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare who along with other Members of Parliament graced the event with their presence.
Western premier Wayne Maepio took the opportunity to share directly with the head of the national government the challenges and achievements by the province.
He also acknowledged the support Western province has continued to receive from the national government in all sectors including health and education.
But expressed his call of need on behalf of his government and the good people of western province, on certain developments which are yet to be addressed and in need of support from the national level.
The event was celebrated based on the theme ‘One people, One nation’.
Mr Maepio spoke of a much needed form of government devised for the unity of all its people.
Encouraging and affirming his views concerning western resources and protecting it for the future of our children.
In congratulating the Western province the Prime Minister commended the premier and his government and emphasized on unity still being a big challenge in the country and was grateful for the chosen theme.
Hon. Sogavare said that despite this being a factor, he is truly proud of the determination of the people to rise above this and be united as single nation.
The Prime Minister reassured the people of Western province that his government is committed to its people and spoke of future commitments in infrastructure and investment currently in progress, and encouraged the provincial government and its people in being strong and committed to its cause.
The Chairman of the organizing committee welcomed delegates and attending public to the program and acknowledged members of the committee for their hard work towards the success of the days celebration.
Last year the second appointed day celebrations was held in Vonunu, Vella La Vella and due to un-changeable reasons this year’s anniversary was moved back to Gizo.
Previously it was planned to be held in Ughele, Rendova.
The government delegation returned to Honiara after the celebration.
