Dear Editor – Over the past many days Honiara has witnessed a mob burning buildings with youth stealing cargoes from them before they were devoured in flames.
This destruction of businesses, some owned by Solomon Islanders and most employing Solomon Islanders, has shown what unskilled, uneducated and unemployed youth are capable of doing under the influence of older adults.
The thousands of citizens who did not participate in the riots were at home for protection and safety. With hearts broken, disappointed and very concerned about the immediate future of the city, we all have been saying prayers and waiting for our leaders to assure us that they are working together to solve the problems leading to the chaos.
The Baha’i Faith perspective always focuses on two crucial principles to solve problems——unity and justice.
Unity means that there is a coming together in kindness, respect and compassion. No prejudice in anyway. Recognizing the oneness of mankind with all its differences.
Melanesian, Micronesian, Polynesian, Asian and European are the groups of people making up the population of Solomon Islands.
This diversity can give strength to the society. Justice means that there is fairness and equality in rights and opportunities for all people—-no matter what province they come from or what country they were raised in.
Have faith in the process of integration which follows disintegration. There is a greater wisdom in this process then even we can comprehend.
Once unity and justice are the goals and are achieved, then peace, prosperity and well-being will be the natural outcomes.
