Police investigate incident
A WOMAN, who was allegedly assaulted by her partner, died at the National Referral Hospital in Honiara yesterday.
White River police in west Honiara confirmed the death of the 48-year-old mother after she was assaulted on Saturday night.
“The woman received wounds and had bruising on her body as result of the assault,” a statement the police issued late yesterday, said.
“Currently the investigation is being conducted by White River Police in relation to the cause of the death of the woman,” the statement added.
“Police are calling on any witnesses to come forward and provide information in relation to the incident.
“At this point of time no further comments will be made as this matter is currently under investigations.”
Police said the assault occurred at around 11.30pm at Forest Valley, White River.
The woman’s death has got the nation talking again yesterday, following a similar incident last month at Marau, east Guadalcanal.
Minister for Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs Freda Tuki yesterday condemned the alleged assault and death in the strongest term.
“This is too much and totally unacceptable,” Mrs Tuki told the Solomon Star.
“So sad that there are still men out there who cannot control their temper and never respect our women and the Family Protection Act,” the minister added.
“My Ministry strongly condemned this kind of violence and killing of women.”
There was also widespread condemnation on social media.
A nurse at the National Referral Hospital told the Solomon Star yesterday this was yet another tragic incident.
“Families should live happily and not to end up like this,” the nurse said.
Details of the incident and the family are still sketchy.
Last month’s incident at Marau involved the alleged murder of a wife by her husband.
The couple had five children, who are now left behind to be cared for by the children’s aunt.
The husband is in police custody charged with the murder of his wife.
Similar incidents also occurred in previous months.
