Events marking International Women’s Day will start today in Honiara with a church service at the Rhema Family Church.
International Women’s Day is marked annually on March 8.
Sarah Buka of the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs told the Sunday Star celebrations marking the event will continue until March 10.
“Celebrations will start with a church service to thank God,” Buka said.
She said celebrations will end on Thursday.
Buka said the nation theme for this year’s event is: “Promise for Fairness: Zero Discrimination”.
The international theme is “Pledging for Parity”.
Buka said the Solomon Islands Full Gospel Association (SIFGA) is organising logistics for today’s church programme.
For the whole week, here is the programme:
Day 2 (Monday 7th March) – Selected School speech & drawing completion is organised by Young Women in Parliament Group
Day 3 (Tuesday 8th March) – Official launch to mark the International Women’s Day, starting with a parade through the capital and followed by a whole day event with speeches and the launch of a number of national reports.
Day 4 (Wednesday 9th Mar) – Skills competition for women in Honiara
Day 5 (Thursday 10th Mar) – Prize giving for competition and official closing of the national event.
Buka said they have limited stalls at the venue. SIWIBA is taking care of organising the stalls. It’s a Free of charge.
“Women are welcome to sell their products and cooked food for the three-day programme.”
The venue for the program will be at SMI premises opposite AusMart at Town Ground.
“A lot of interesting activities will take place so we want to invite the general public to be part of the celebration and campaign.”
The Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs together with Honiara City Council are co-hosting the event this year.
