The Women’s Rights Action Movement (WRAM) has condemned the barbaric act of the raping of a female student at Ruavatu Secondary School in North East Guadalcanal as reported in the media on Monday.
In a statement on Monday WRAM said; “This incident which occurred over the weekend has brought to our attention the fact that some people in our society are capable of committing such horrendous acts. This girl went to Ruavatu Secondary which increased her potential to contribute to the development of the country. Such an act will affect the victim for the rest of her life, impeding her chances of participating fully in the society.”
The organization with one of its main focus areas being ‘eliminating violence against women’ has voiced their desire that the perpetrators be brought to justice. The organization would like to reiterate that women and girls are always the victims of such violence and this need to be stopped. All human beings have the right to live their life with dignity, free from horrendous crimes such as this.
The WRAM has applauded the previous Government for the passing of the Family Protection Bill, a major step in strengthening the protection framework for women. The Penal Code Review is still ongoing. The Women’s Rights Action Movement continues to advocate for gender equality and human rights of women, it also aims to influence government Policies and Legislation to improve the situation of women in Solomon Islands.
