WITH the FIFA World Cup in Brazil just around the corner, Auki town is already lit up with the hype of the worldwide and biggest sporting event on the planet.
People can be seen wearing the colors of their favorite soccer nations, pasting stickers on their vehicles; some even have their hair cuts as their favorite soccer players.
Another obvious evidence of the World Cup fever hitting Auki town is that most of the television (TV) screens in the shops in Auki have become somewhat gone.
Some have even gone to the extent of going over to Honiara just to fetch a TV screen so that they can watch their teams compete in the 2014 FIFA World Cup tourney.
“I am praying for my team Brazil to win the world cup. I know that their key star Neymar will do the job for the Brazilians, “A Brazil fan, all dressed up in Brazilian colors said.
Vehicles have been amongst the most common sights of the hypes with most of the taxis in Auki flying flags of their teams and even stickers of the players and teams on their vehicles.
“I am all for Germany. They have proven both in the past and even today that they always reach the last four of all the World Cup games they participated in.
“This year is no exception as they will lift the World Cup over favorites Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands, Uruguay or England,” A German fan and Taxi driver said.
The fever was boosted yesterday with the arrival of the Paoa Buzz Magazine, which features all the World Cup fixtures, photos of players and teams, and various other information needed to follow the World Cup.
“I will be pasting this photo of my favorite team and defending champions, Spain, in my room,” a student from Aligegeo told this paper.
The World Cup’s official opening is expected to be viewed live on Friday morning.
