THE national Statistics office in Honiara has joined other countries in the world to celebrate the world Statistics day on Monday.
The theme’s celebration was ‘Better Data, Better Lives.’
A statement from the office explained it was important to host that event for the second time to give opportunity for the public to learn about the importance of the central office in Honiara.
“All governments need good statistics, but in developing countries the need is even more important.
“Good statistics are a core component of good governance. They also provide a sound basis for the design, management, monitoring, and evaluation of national policy frameworks such as poverty reduction strategies and for monitoring progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).”
It said that citizens also need statistics to hold their governments to account.
It added Solomon Islands had experience a lot of challenges since 2003 after the ethnic tension; therefore Statistics was important to prove the realities.
The programme was held over a day.
Officers from various departments within the office have their time to explain roles of statistics in the country.
Members of the public also came forward to raise questions about the statistics and also learn about their.
