WORLD Teacher’s Day has been marked in Honiara on Tuesday with more than a thousand teachers convening for the event.
The celebration started with a fellowship service at the Catholic Holy Cross Cathedral, followed by float parade and official program at the National Museum, Central Honiara.
The day was colourfully celebrated under the World theme “Teachers at the heart of change today and beyond.”
In his keynote address Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Education and Human Resource and Development (MEHRD) Dr Franco Rodie said World Teacher’s Day provide the chance to celebrate to thank the teachers for their hard work.
“We celebrate this day to reflect on their role and their achievements while students and parents should recognise indefensible service provided by teachers in our country.
“Teachers are the pride and joyous of the country, teachers are truly national treasures worth celebrating especially on this day (yesterday),” he said.
Some teachers from various schools in the provinces have also attended the event yesterday.
Dr Franco also extended his words of appreciation to teachers in the provinces for the service they delivered through the education sector.
He said teachers are indeed the pillars of the school system.
Through his ministry, Dr Franco asked the Solomon Islands Government to recognise the role of the teachers in the country and all the initiatives of teachers.
He then announced that his ministry is developing the Education Bill and soon to implement it when the bill is passed.
It was a moment of excitement for the teachers, when hearing the Education Bill being developed.
“I would advocate that teachers are the heart of change today and beyond,” he said.
He added, it is important to recognise the teachers’ contribution to education delivery in our country and the role teachers play in preparing the future generation and society.
Dr Franco has urged teachers to abide by their teaching career which make them unique over other professionals.
The program yesterday ended with singing and dancing from different school groups.
