Solomon Islands is dominated with a youthful population which consisted of more than 70 percent age below 29 years old, therefore, investing and nurturing young people in all sectors is a prerequisite towards sustainable and determine nation envisioning its future in terms of human resource development.
Solomon Islands Youth for Change Team is an informal social volunteer group formed in 2005 and have been advocating for young people’s participation in social, economic and political spheres.
In 2006 the team initiated and implemented the Youth in Parliament Pilot Project by nominating a young candidate at that time who contested the East Honiara Constituency advocating “Youths of Today Leaders for Today”.
The project opt the two main objectives:
(1) to raise the attention that young people’s issues are not to be taken lightly and government should ensure to address these issues seriously.
(2) Set an example whereby young competent leaders who wishes to take politics as their career to run in elections and build confidence and experience.
As the outcomes of the project, there was action by the Grand Coalition for Change Government led by Manasseh Sogavare who had the political will and established the Ministry of Women Youth Children and Family Affairs and also since then, a number of young leaders under the age of 29 years old have contested Provincial and National General Elections which a number of them have been elected into the public office.
The team has been working closely with the National Youth Development Division and stakeholders over the last eight years in implementing the National Youth Policy but believe that there is more to be done by all sectors in terms of including young people’s participation and making them the center of their work.
Therefore, Youth Mainstreaming, considering it as National Goal is a venture towards a determine nation’s future any government of the day should prioritize. If one thinks that it is not paramount try ignorance.
In pushing the agenda forward, the Solomon Islands Youth for Change Team has nominated and registered Mr. Elwin Taloimatakwa as Independent Candidate who will be contesting the East Honiara Constituency in this General Election 2014 with the slogan “YES! WE MAKE IT HAPPEN.”
The team appeals to public, voters of East Honiara Constituency and other constituencies throughout the country to think seriously and make the right choice by choosing the determine leaders who are constructors and not destructors, those who have the competency to run the government of the day and not government of the night and let’s make 2014 General Election free and fair as well as a crime free one.
Let the mission of the people who we voted them in the tenth parliament be, what belongs to the people goes back to the people and not what belongs to people is mine and I can take it whenever I want to.
