THERE are many more newly established car wash locations being set up by youths in Honiara.
Many of these car wash spots are run by youths in various communities inside the national capital, providing daily round the clock car wash service.
Youths who have set up these car wash spots said it is a fast and easy way of earning money.
“You do not need a skill to wash a car. Anywhere water is accessible; we can provide the service for busy people who have no time to wash their cars during working days.
“This is our only source of income to help ourselves.
“Not only that but car washing keeps us the young people busy doing something useful other than just indulging in drugs, alcohol and other unlawful practices,” Paul of Vura 1 car wash said.
Many of these car wash areas can be found in many feeder roads and communities around Honiara.
John of Kola Ridge cemetery car wash spot said that he and his boys not only wash cars but also help polish and decorate cars as well.
“Most of our boys have become somewhat specialists in both washing cars and polishing or decorating cars.
“Some have even helped cab drivers connect their stereos and speakers.
“Car washing is not only popular amongst us but has become part of our daily routine as we see a lot of money from it,” John said.
Many of these young people earn up to $1000 daily only from washing cars.
“We have different charges for different vehicles.
“Cars are $30, buses and trucks range from $50 dollars upwards.
“However if we are asked to clean inside cars, then we have other charges for those, however all under the service that we provide at our car wash areas,” Charlie from V11 car wash said.
Meanwhile more and more young people are starting to create businesses all for the sake of generating income, as a result of unemployment.
